When it comes to safety and security, it’s no laughing matter. In the travel industry, you’re provided with so much confidential information. You’re probably just thinking about credit cards, but it doesn’t stop there. Chances are, you’re receiving client passport information, credit card information, dates of birth, and so much more. Some suppliers even require ACH transfers directly from your client’s bank account – that’s a big risk if you don’t have the right security in place.
Let’s start by talking about protecting yourself first.
If you don’t already have Errors & Omissions/Liability Insurance, you should really start there. Chat with your insurance agent because there are some insurance carriers who provide coverage for IT-related security issues.
Next, you should really look into protecting your computer and your passwords. If you’re writing down all of your passwords and carrying them around with you, you’re just asking for trouble. There are so many ways to safely store passwords online nowadays that it’s almost crazy not to. If you have an Android or iPhone, chances are it comes equipped with complimentary and secure password storage. If you’d rather not store that information directly on your browser or device, there are companies like LastPass, 1Password. Dashlane, Zoho Vault, and more!*
Now that you’ve hopefully got a line of defense set up, the next place to look is your client’s personal information. You should be utilizing a CRM or additional technology to store your client’s data safely and securely. Most professional CRM’s have encryption services to store personal information like credit cards, dates of birth, passport information, and more. Note: make sure that when choosing to store personal information, you check to make sure your provider is PCI compliant.
If you do happen to write down personal information about a client, please consider purchasing a shredder to destroy anything from getting lost or stolen.
